Chelsea welcomes Leicester to the Bridge

Frank Lampard’s regime starts today at the Bridge. His team, his style of play and his philosophy will finally be realised today as he leads out his team against Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City. Under Lampard, this Chelsea team has lost both games against League contenders Manchester United and Liverpool. Last Sunday’s match against United, Chelsea looked sharp within the first 15 minutes of the match and were unlucky not to score early on. Several shots against the goalposts, near misses and two disallowed goals, showed signs of a changed way of play for the team in Blue. We ultimately lost the match 4-0 in a game we dominated for 60 minutes.

On Wednesday in the Super Cup against defending Champions League winners Liverpool, we were unlucky to lose in a penalty shoot-out, where once again we were the stronger team. Goals from Giroud and Jorginho made it 2-2. But it was the manner in which we played that was so illuminating. Having Kante back in the playing squad made all the difference as he bossed midfield giving Jorginho the freedom of the park to orchestrate the match. Pedro, Pulisic and Tammy were live wires and should have scored several goals on another night. The number of times our forward line broke behind the defensive wall of Liverpool was delightful and a possible blueprint for other teams against the Reds.

Lessons learned from these two games should spur on the team this afternoon. Fighting back when we were 1-1 and 1-2 down against Liverpool should strengthen the mentality of the players. Shifting gears, slowing the games down or upping the pace was another hallmark of this fast-evolving Chelsea team under Lampard.

This afternoon’s match is a test. It will be at home at least and with the amazing support from the Bridge faithful, this should be game we earn our first three points of the long season ahead. Willian and Rudiger are in the playing squad today and hopefully, we will see them on the pitch. Defensively we need confidence and perhaps keeping a clean sheet will help boost our self-belief.
